Handicraft Workshop

Handicraft is one of the simple and easy workshops. Everyone can learn it very fast by joining it. This work is especially for those who do not have any job to earn money. It is money-earning work and it is very interesting.

In handicraft we learn to make bags from nylon string and many other things. We weave many types of bags with many designs and strings.

At NAG we started this workshop from December 2001. Our teachers name is Meena Lama. She teaches us to make paper flowers and other things. The classes are from 3pm to 4.30pm every day except for Saturday and Sunday. It takes us three to four days to weave a bag. We have sent some of the bags to Switzerland. I hope few of our sponsors will get a chance to see the bags made in NAG. Now we have started to make flower. Hope this handicraft will also go fine and we love to make it.

The name of our teacher is Mrs. Prerna Chamling. She is from Darjeeling, India. She has done the masters in Kathak Dance from India. From school, we go by tempo and it takes us 15 to 20 minutes to reach her house. We go on Saturday, Sunday and on Wednesday. In one class, we dance for more than 2 hour with a short break in between. We practice it at home too. We all look forward that one-day we can teach the little ones in NAG. We Love to Dance.

Ranjita’s Story

Me and my family and my past

I would like to give some introduction of my family. I have three sisters. Two are smaller and one is elder than me. I have brother also. My sister’s names are Sangita, Manjita and Ambika. And my elder brother name is Sujan. They all study in a village but me and my sister Manjita study here at NAG. My big sister study in class XII, brother in class XI and Ambika in class IV. Three of them are very hard workers and my mother also. But my father is an alcoholic and plays cards. That is why we don’t like him. Big sister wakes up at 5 o’clock in the morning and does all the works and makes breakfast for all and then she has to go to the college at 6:30am. After she goes, my small sister Ambika has to do all the work. She has to cook food and give lunch for all. She takes lunch to mother in the shop. After that she goes to school. We have a small shop where my mother sits and she goes there at 4:3o am and come back at 9 pm. Our small shop is very far and it takes one hour to reach there. Mother always works. She won’t come home for lunch. At 3:3o my brother and sister will come from school. After that my big sister Ambika and my big brother will go to help our mother. After that they go home and give tuition class to our small sisters.

How did I come to NAG

I used to live with my parents and because of being poor, my mother sent my sister Manjita and me to Kathmandu with a woman, who kept us to work in a place called Boudha. I started to live there with her, and work hard. I had to get up early in the morning and had to sweep all the roads in Boudha.  She never used to feed us properly for doing hard work also. I did that work for one year. Miss Nicole, Sir Jeeten and sir Frederic always used to see me sweeping the road in Boudha. Then they decided to keep at NAG. This is how I came to NAG.

How do I like NAG in my today’s life

I found NAG a place, which has given me hope for my future. I cannot explain how much I am happy to stay here. Every one is the same at NAG. Every one is so friendly that I don’t feel sad to remember my past life. As I think of myself as a very lucky girl to stay in a place like NAG.

Wishes do come True

I am Isor Mishra. I am one of the students of nag, you can call me a nag’ger. I am sixteen and I am handicap. I have to use crutches to walk wherever I go and it is very difficult to walk. Because of my legs, I used to hate my life and be so nasty. After a trip to Calcutta I have a new desire, a new feeling for my life and hope to become something. Here is what happened on the trip.

The trip begins with nineteen students and with four teachers. The day before leaving Nag I was given a new tracksuit and shoes. My shoe was on my bedside. I had my new crutches too. In addition, was thinking if I could make it or not. Nicole miss had been kind to me and said Deepak Nakarmi will be always be with me on my journey. Deepak is a very strong boy. If he needs he can carry me as well as my bags. I was so glad that Nicole miss had thought something for me. Nicole Miss wished me good luck for my journey. I was happy too. Everybody was down stairs, Fredrice Sir hugged me tightly. He was also very happy for me. Hemraj went to get the bus, which he had ordered yesterday. He came after some time with a taxi. He told us he did not get the bus .The one he asked yesterday was not willing to go today. Gush, Nepali, I thought they could not keep their promise. So we got into 4 taxis. It was little difficult for me to get in the taxi. Deepak B was great help. Many of the kids waved us goodbye, seeing this I got excited and impatient when the taxi started moving. I was looking out of the window, things behind me were moving fast. We reached bus-park around 3:30. We have reserved the bus. We put a school banner on the bus side. Federic Sir had already separated the groups. I was in Frederic sir’s group. We got on the bus. I was sitting in the last seat of the bus with Deepak B. Bus begins to go faster and faster. I was looking out of the window. At about 4:30 Jeeten sir and Frederic sir took a group photo in front of the bus, and we moved again. We crossed more than 20 bridges until we reached Ramechhap. We had dinner at 8:15 in that place. After that again we got in to the bus and listen some Nepali songs. Some of my friend slept on the bus. I was so excited I could not sleep at all. We had to stop in some places because the armies were checking each bus that passes through there. They checked our luggage and our pockets. I was annoyed with them because they checked students too. I did not say anything, in a few minutes, they let us go.

We reached Hetauda at 10:36. However, we did not stop right there because it was very dark. We listened to Nepali folk songs. We reached Kakarbhitta at around 9am. We had some time and eat allu puri. Frederic Sir, Jeeten Sir and Panthi Sir went to exchange Indian currency for everyone. Later they returned and again we were on our way to Siligury travelling in a jeep. We were there after two hours. I can see all the Indian people staring at us. Seeing this I felt little proud of myself. We rested in a hotel. I took bath with hot water. Frederic Sir fell fast asleep because he was very tired and exhausted. Others were sleeping too. Some of them were very excited to see a train. We had to make two groups. Boys and girls. Girls ate first and we, boys always last (ladies first). Then we all got our pocket money (50 rupees I.C). Time went very fast. Jeeten Sir, Bikash Dai (the brother of Jeeten sir) went to get the train tickets. All of us were ready, Deepak B and me had to take an auto- rickshaw to the train station. At 7:15, we all were in the train. Jeeten Sir counted the students to know whether anybody was missing or not. I look at the train; my God it is like a large snake, my eyes could not reach the end. I had seen it in the picture and in the films but not in the reality. We all get on the train and the train started to move. I took a short nap. We had to shut the windows of the train at the night. Therefore, I could not see anything outside. I wake up in the morning around six and washed my face. It has a funny toilet inside it. You are bound to hold the pipe if you want to do toilet. We drank coffee and train stopped in Calcutta at 10am. To be continued………..

On 16th of December when the students of my school, NiNA were having an exam, this was our “SECOND TERM EXAM”, that day was a happy day for NAGers and was a very nice day. What I mean is, that day our godfather whose name is Frederic Perrier arrived at NAG. We were very happy when we saw him after a long time. He had told us (before he came) that he would bring a surprise when he came. The surprise was a telescope. I had never touched or even seen a telescope before. I had only read and heard about it. At first, FREDERIC sir made us look at the moon and then at Jupiter through the telescope, which I had never seen. I saw the moon bigger than the Jupiter because of the distance Jupiter and the moon are from earth. The previous day he taught the bigger boys, who are studying in a college, how to use the telescope. Sir gave us a chance to learn more about the telescope. We had many groups who would practice it for a day and the next day another group would practice. There were four students in each group. At first, Sir taught us how to use the telescope and then left us to see all around the sky. At first we saw the Boudha stupa and made the exact aiming. I started looking at the sky by putting the eyepiece of 20mm. I found Saturn and let my friends watch. After that we found Jupiter, Mars, and the moon too. So, now I or any other Nepali children can get a chance to look through the telescope at the heavenly bodies in the sky. Now at NAG we have a great opportunity to use our telescope to see the sky and dream of bigger things.

Tae-kwon-do Workshop

We have many workshops at NAG. Tae-kwon do is one of them. It is a kind of a martial art. Everyday, we practice Tae-kwon-do in the morning from 6: 00am to 7:00am except on Saturday and Sunday.

We have sixty students who are in the Tae-kwon-do workshop. There are students 7 years old and above. About ten students have left the workshop because of different reasons. Some are too lazy to wake up in the cold morning; some are scared that they might break their bones.

Our Tae-kwon-do teacher’s name is Rajiv Thapa. He lives nearby NAG. He is a very experienced teacher. We like the way he teaches us.

We have gone to different inter-school Tae-kwon-do championship competitions. We have won many medals and received many certificates. Until now we have about twenty-five medals in the NAG office and all our certificates are framed and hung on the walls in front of the office room. Whenever, you are here and you want to read the certificates you can see them on our walls.

We have grading every two months. If we pass in the grading, our belt is changed with a senior belt. When we are a beginner, we get a white belt and after a grading, we get yellow belt and so on. The greatest belt is the black belt.

I feel this workshop is very necessary because it builds up our bones and makes our muscles strong. We can protect ourselves from our enemy. We do many exercises while we practice Tae-kwon-do.

There are many Tae-kwon-do championship competitions between schools, which helps to build co-operation and friendship between the schools. Likewise, the Championship competitions between the countries also help to keep a good relationship between the countries. Therefore, I feel this workshop is important.

THANKA Workshop

Hi, I am Bimala (Seema) Tamang and would like to write about the Thanka Paintings methods and materials. The first item required for the making of a Thanka is a suitable piece of fabric cloth. Before the preparation of the cloth, we sometimes need to wash it. This is very important. After washing the size of the cloth usually shrinks a bit as it dries. Then, when it is completely dry, we cut the cloth to fit the wooden stretch frame.

We have to prepare the canvas by covering in a special gelatine animal Fat. Since the prepared canvas was quite translucent, an Special original design can be attached to the back and held up to a window for tracing.

The painting part is very hard. It takes us many months to finish one painting. After finishing the Thanka painting, we paint many areas with gold.

It is not easy to do Thanka painting. Only ones with patience can do it.

There is a great man who makes every man feel small.

But the real great man is the man who makes everyone feel great.

Life is to smile

Life is to smile, not to cry

If there is tear drop in your eyes

You would certainly feel shy

Don’t be afraid of thinking

The ghost will kill you

But sure in knowledge

God is always beside yo

If you smile

Your days will be brighter

Not only you are thinking

While you smile

You will be loving all

No rich, no poor

No great, no small

Therefore, life is to smile not to cry

In addition, life is to study not to spoil

To show your good work don’t feel shy

Moreover, if you don’t get success, keep on trying until you die.

Though I am not a poet, I wish I would be, for I try to say,

I wish it would be.
